Tournament Sanction

Tournaments

 

1) MMAL schools and students are strongly encouraged to attend sanctioned MMAL tournaments.

 

a) 6th Gup/Kyu and above need to attend at least one tournament a year.

 

b) 1st Gup/Kyu and above are required to become certified as a tournament official.

 

2) MMAL schools are encouraged to host a local or regional tournament of their own.

 

a) Submit date of tournament for approval to MMAL headquarters at least six months in advance to ensure dates do not conflict.

 

b) Rules and divisions must be that of the MMAL (to follow under separate cover) to ensure all competitions are uniform and consistent.

 

c) Submit flyer and tournament information to MMAL headquarters to be shared with all schools so we can get everyone involved.

 

Note: Any MMAL school that hosts a seminar or tournament must provide their own insurance, presenting a copy to MMAL headquarters. You must also put in your waiver the MMAL and all officers and agents are not held responsible for any injuries or accidents.

 

Sanctioned Tournaments

 

The MMAL recognizes that a number of schools or other organizations for that matter do not want to leave their governing bodies regarding rank or style, but are looking for support and members / competitors for tournaments. In addition it is the desire of the MMAL to have a tournament circuit that will foster sportsmanship, fair and equal treatment of all competitors regardless of system or style, and a point system that not only rewards competitors for placing, but rewards competitors for supporting the organization and working hard to better themselves.

 

 Notes:

 

Promoters are required to furnish a copy of their liability insurance certificate to the MMAL for approval. It is also required that a waiver is utilized and signed by every competitor. The waiver must name that the MMAL and all officers, agents, and employees of the MMAL are not liable.

Sanctioning Information

 

     All promoters must be members in good standing with the MMAL. The MMAL provides for several levels of sanctioning explained below. Regardless of sanction level, the promoter agrees to provide the executive offices with the names, addresses, and email addresses of all competitors in Excel format within 30 Days of the completion of the tournament. Furthermore, the promoter agrees to provide the MMAL with information on the top 3 competitors in each division in Excel format within 30 days of the completion of the event.

 

1. BBB Sanction - No Cost to Member in Good Standing (Small Events Only >100 Competitors Expected)

a. All competitors receive 1 point towards Annual Outstanding Competitor Awards.

b. All Division Winners receive the following: 3rd Place 1 point, 2nd Place 2 Points, 1st Place 3 Points towards MMAL National Champion Awards.

c. Promoter agrees to provide an adult black belt judge at all MMAL tournaments within 200 miles and provide three competitors to each sanctioned tournament during the tournament year. In the event the promoter fails to provide the required competitors, he or she will pay the other MMAL Sanctioned Event promoter the minimum registration fee for each competitor he or she is short.

 

2. A Sanction - $50 Cost to Member in Good Standing (No Cost to Non-Profit or Charity Events)

a. All competitors receive 2 points towards Annual Outstanding Competitor Awards.

b. All Division Winners receive the following: 3rd Place 2 points, 2nd Place 3 Points, 1st Place 4 Points towards MMAL National Champion Awards.

c. Promoter agrees to provide an adult black belt judge at all MMAL tournaments within 200 miles and provide five competitors to each sanctioned tournament during the tournament year. In the event the promoter fails to provide the required competitors, he or she will pay the other MMAL Sanctioned Event promoter the minimum registration fee for each competitor he or she is short.

 

3. AA Sanction - $100 Cost to Member in Good Standing (No Cost to Non-Profit or Charity Events)

a. All competitors receive 3 points towards Annual Outstanding Competitor Awards.

b. All Division Winners receive the following: 3rd Place 3 points, 2nd Place 4 Points, 1st Place 5 Points towards MMAL National Champion Awards.

c. Promoter agrees to provide one or more adult black belt judges at all MMAL tournaments within 200 miles and provide eight competitors to each sanctioned tournament during the tournament year. In the event the promoter fails to provide the required competitors, he or she will pay the other MMAL Sanctioned Event promoter the minimum registration fee for each competitor he or she is short.

 

4. AAA Sanction - $150 Cost to Member in Good Standing (No Cost to Non-Profits or Charity Events)

a. All competitors receive 4 points towards Outstanding Competitor Awards.

b. All Division Winners receive the following: 3rd Place 4 points, 2nd Place 5 Points, 1st Place 6 Points  towards MMAL National Champion Awards.

c. Promoter agrees to provide one or more adult black belt judges at all MMAL tournaments within 200 miles and provide ten competitors to each sanctioned tournament during the tournament year. In the event the promoter fails to provide the required competitors, he or she will pay the other MMAL Sanctioned Event promoter the minimum registration fee for each competitor he or she is short.

 

 

Application Documents and Fee

 

 It is the purpose of the MMAL Tournament Sanctioning Division to promote safe, family friendly events. Furthermore, for applications to be processed the following information must accompany the application. This information will be used to help determine approval and level of sanction.

 

1. Copy of Tournament Rules*

2. List of all Event Divisions and with breakouts (i.e. sparring broken out by ages, ranks, weights, etc.) Must follow General MMAL Format.*

3. A list of accompanying event seminars (if any) and instructor information.

4. A list of special guests, if any.

5. A list of other sanctions sought.

6. Estimated number of competitors.

7. Certified Check or Money Order (if required)

 

Optional Services

The MMAL provides optional services to Tournament Promoters/Directors for a fee. The following is a list of services available and current rates.*

 

1. Complete Event Promotion and Coordination Assistance**

2. On-Site Floor/Ring Coordination $50

3. Judges/Center Certifications $25 per person

4. Specialized Seminars***

 

 

* The executive board reserves the right to waive or amend fees for services upon review.

**Complete Event Promotion and Coordination Assistance is determined on a case by case review. It usually involves a percentage of the events gross income being earmarked for the MMAL.

 ***The cost for specialized seminars are considered on a case by case basis. Associated School Members of the MMAL may elect to use banked dollars toward free seminars.

 

 

General Information

 

The MMAL Tournament Sanctioning Division operates under the direction of the MMAL Executive Board. MMAL Sanctions are processed and issued at the discretion of the executive offices. Application does not necessarily imply a sanction will be awarded. In the event a sanction is denied, the applicant will receive any fees paid to the MMAL back. Sanctioned promoters who deliberately or negligently fail to comply with the terms of this agreement will be barred from seeking a sanction for a period of not less than three years. Any sanctioned promoter who is found to be utilizing illegal or unethical practices in connection with his or her event shall have their MMAL Sanction withdrawn and shall be barred from seeking a sanction for life.

   

·         Tournaments that do not follow general MMAL rules or Division Formats must provide a copy of their rules and division breakouts forms. This is to insure that the safety of the competitor is being considered and to allow for adjustments in the point ranking scales.

Seminars

  • Each MMAL chartered school must host at least one seminar.
  •  It is strongly suggested that chartered schools utilize the resources available to them through their membership with MMAL to conduct a seminar.
  •  Members of the Board of Directors are available to teach on a variety of different topics. Seminars should be requested at least three months in advance so they may be scheduled properly.
  • All seminars will be advertised and information published so other MMAL schools may take advantage of the opportunity.
  •  It is also encouraged other schools, organizations are invited to attend.
  • The MMAL is not a closed organization and affiliates are encouraged to make everyone in the martial arts community feel welcome at sanctioned events..
  • The host school is responsible for all travel expense of the person(s) conducting the seminar – travel, lodging, food.
  • The cost of a one day (8 hour) seminar through is $500.00 and it is the host school’s responsibility to cover seminar fee.  
    • Schools my offer multi-day seminars.   
    • Banked school promotional/certificate fees may be utilized to help pay for seminar expenses if conducted through the MMAL. All participants of the seminar will receive a professional hand out that covers the material pertaining to the day’s activities.
  • Chartered school owners receive on an annual basis forty percent back on test fees. Banked school promotional/certificate fees may be utilized to help pay for seminar expenses if conducted through the MMAL. School owners may, also, set whatever fees they feel are appropriate for the seminar to assist with expenses..
