Chang-Hon TaeKwon-Do

Master Valin is the Technical Director for the MMAL's Chang-Hon TaeKwon-Do program.  As such Master Valin oversees the technical specifications and their adherence to the late General Choi's guidelines as set forth by the general in his Seminole work the Encyclopedia of TaeKwon-Do.   Below you will find school charter information, rank requirements, certification requirements and a list of the members of the TaeKwon-Do Board.

School Charter Requirements

Any member requesting a school charter must be the owner or senior instructor holding the rank of at least 1st Dan.  

  •  Any school owner or senior instructor who is below the rank of 4th Dan must train with an instructor who is 4th Dan or above in the MMAL at least 1 time per quarter to maintain a charter.   

  • Any school owner or senior instructor who is below the rank of 4th Dan must assemble a panel of certified instructors in the MMAL to hold a Black Belt test. A certified instructor may test up to 1 grade below their own (example: a 4th Dan may test a 2nd Dan for their 3rd Dan). All other tests will require a panel of certified instructors in the MMAL. Students who are being tested by a school owner or senior instructor must be a member of the MMAL and appropriate paperwork / fees submitted to headquarters for certification. It is the responsibility of the school owner or the senior instructor to ensure:   

    • All students are registered with the MMAL.   

    • All students ranks are current and on file.   

    •  All instructor and assistant certifications are current and on file.  

    •  School charter is current and on file.  

    •  School charter and instructors’ and assistant instructors’ certifications are displayed in their school(s) if it is possible.

  •   All instructors and assistant instructors teaching must attend a certification course to receive your certification and every 2 years minimum to maintain your certification. All school owners or senior instructors must keep MMAL headquarters informed of events, activities, etc. so it can be posted and sent out to all MMAL schools. Each MMAL chartered school must host at least one seminar. It is suggested that chartered schools utilize the resources available to them through their membership with MMAL to conduct a seminar. Members of the Board of Directors are available to teach on a variety of different topics.

Student Membership Requirements

  • Membership in the MMAL is open to all individuals of good character actively training in the martial arts.
  •  Membership in the MMAL may be revoked for a criminal conviction, or not following the Constitution and By-Laws of this organization.
  • All school owners and instructors shall uphold the Constitution and By-Laws of the MMAL.
  • Members are expected exercise cooperation with their instructor, fellow members, and officials of the MMAL.
  • Any MMAL member who owns/operates a school or program must charter with and obtain instructor certification through the organization in order to offer MMAL rank certification to his or her students.
  •  Membership within the MMAL entitles participants to apply for the following:
    •  Registration as both an Association and Competition Member
    • The opportunity for individual Gup/Kyu rank certification
    • The opportunity for individual Dan rank Certification
    • The opportunity for instructor or tournament official certifications – valid for 2 years e) School Charter – valid for 2 years

Rank & Time at Grade Requirements

Rank Classifications In the Chang-Hun system of TaeKwon-Do there are two classifications:   

  • Gup – under Black Belt – consisting of 10 levels.   
  •  Dan – Black Belt – consisting of 9 levels.      
    • The first six Black Belt ranks represent skill and physical application of the art of TaeKwon-Do     
    • The last three Black Belte ranks are awarded based on the outstanding devotion  and representation of the art of TaeKwon-Do.
    • There are distinct classifications within the Black Belt ranks as well:  
      • 1st through 3rd Dan are considered novice   
      • 4th and 5th Dan are considered expert   
      • 6th through 8th Dan are considered master – at these ranks the student is entitled to be addressed as Master   
      • The rank of 9th Dan is reserved for the title of Grand Master, the highest rank and honor a Black Belt can receive.
    • Titles of Instructors:
      • Assistant Instructor – this title will be held by a Black Belt who holds the rank of 1st or 2nd Dan and passed the certification course with the MMAL.    
      • Instructor – this title will not be held by a Black Belt until they have obtained the rank of 3rd Dan or higher and passed the certification course with the MMAL. The only exception to this is if it is a school owner and they are the highest ranking Black Belt.   
      • Master – this title will be held by a Black Belt who holds the rank of 6th to 8th Dan and is actively instructing  
      • Master Instructor – this title will be held by the owner or senior instructor at a school if there are more then one master rank at the location. Time Requirements

Time requirements are based on a minimum of 2 hours per week for Gup ranks and 3 hours per week for Dan ranks. A member joining from a different style of martial art will start at 8th Gup – Yellow Belt (maximum).

 

Time requirements are a minimum; times can be set further apart depending on the student or situation.

 

Gup Ranks:   

  • If you are testing for 9th Gup through 6th Gup…………………….3 months  
  • If you are testing for 5th Gup through 2nd Gup……………………6 months   
  • If you are testing for 1st Gup Black Stripe……………………….. 9 months Dan / Black Belt Ranks

Black Belt Ranks (Dans)

  • If you are testing for Probationary Black Belt…………9 months to 1 year  
  • If you are testing for 1st Dan…………………………………………..1 year   
  •  If you are testing for 2nd Dan………………………………………….2 years   
  • If you are testing for 3rd Dan…………………………………………..3 years   
  • If you are testing for 4th Dan or higher……………………………….4 years

Additional Requirements No student over the rank of 9th Gup/Kyu shall be promoted more than one and a half Gup/Kyu levels. Any instructor who needs to demote an MMAL promoted student in rank must provide a written explanation to the president and Board of Directors. Approval must be given prior to the withdrawal of MMAL rank certification. Submitted and approved testing guidelines / requirements must be followed in order for the issuance of MMAL rank certification to be considered valid.

 

Unless, otherwise approved by the Board as a style variance, the minimum age requirements to obtain Black Belt (Dan) rank through the MMAL is as follows:   

  • Junior Black Belt ………………………………………10 to 12 years of age  
  •  Probationary Black Belt ……………………………………..13 years of age   
  • 1st Dan …………………………………………………………14 years of age   
  • 2nd Dan ……………………………………………………..…16 years of age   
  • 3rd Dan ……���…………………………..……………………19 years of age   
  • 4th Dan …………………………��……�������………………..…23 years of age

Ranks beyond that of 1st Dan, will have separate prescribe criteria for progressing that include teaching responsibilities, seminar work, and tournament official participation.

 

Fee Schedules

All fees are subject to change without notice. Forty percent of all Gup and Dan certificates fees will be held by the MMAL and provided to chartered school/instructor at the end of each calendar year to be used to cover seminar fees, travel expenses, etc.

Biography Picture

Mr. Valin has been training in TaeKwon-Do since 1979 and currently holds the rank of 7th Degree (Dan) Black Belt. Master Valin is the Master Instructor and President of The Midwest Academy Of TaeKwon-Do with its' headquarters and one of its schools in Elgin, IL, There are additional locations in Wheeling and Mount Prospect, IL and he also has schools throughout the Midwest reporting to him under the Midwest Martial Arts League. Certifications are held with the Midwest Martial Arts League, the International TaeKwon-Do Union, the International TaeKwon-Do Federation, the United States TaeKwon-Do Federation, and the American TaeKwon-Do Institute. Master Valin has been instructing students ranging in age from 7 to 74 years old since 1984. Master Valin is also actively involved with organizing, promoting, and officiating tournaments and events locally and nationally and has put together a number of successful demonstration teams. Master Valin also has extensive experience in Ju Jitsu, Hapkido and other forms of self-defense.

Mr. Kuhfeldt has been training in TaeKwon-Do since 1984 and currently holds the rank of 6th Degree (Dan) Black Belt. Certifications are held with the Midwest Martial Arts League, the International TaeKwon-Do Union, the Midwest Academy of TaeKwon-Do, the International TaeKwon-Do Federation, the United States TaeKwon-Do Federation, and the American TaeKwon-Do Institute. Master Kuhfeldt has been instructing since 1992 and is also actively involved in tournaments both as an official and a competitor. Master Kuhfeldt is a key member in the demonstration teams Master Valin has organized, and has extensive experience in Ju Jitsu and self-defense. Master Kuhfeldt was instrumental in organizing and instructing a TaeKwon-Do club while he was in college. Master Kuhfeldt is the Program Director for the Wheeling Park District and is the Training Director for the Midwest Academy of TaeKwon-Do.

Mr. Brabeck has been training in Tae Kwon-Do since 1977 and currently holds the rank of 6th Degree (Dan) Black Belt. Certifications are held with the Universal TKD Federation, World TKD Alliance, and Chung Do Kwan. Master Brabeck trained with the late Grand Master Han Chak Yo, who was hand picked by General Choi to spread the art of TKD. Master Brabeck also owns Northwest TKD, and recently was invited by Master Valin for him and his students to join the students of MATKD. Master Brabeck organized the first National TKD Tournament for the physically and developmentally challenged in 1993 and taught special TKD classes at Little City. Some of his past experience include: Executive Director for Tournaments for the Universal TKD Federation, UTF/WTA Demonstration Team Secretary General of the World TKD Alliance. Master Brabeck is also the Technical Director and Korean Translation Advisor for the Midwest Academy of TaeKwon-Do.

Mr. Zielinski has been training in TaeKwon-Do since 1984 and currently holds the rank of 6th Degree (Dan) Black Belt in TaeKwon-Do and a 2nd degree Black Belt in JuJitsu. Certifications are held with the Midwest Martial Arts League, the International TaeKwon-Do Union, The Midwest Academy Of TaeKwon-Do, The International TaeKwon-Do Federation, the United States TaeKwon-Do Federation, and Great Lakes Martial Arts. Master Zielinski has been instructing since 1991 and has been actively involved in demonstration teams for Great Lakes Martial Arts and The Midwest Academy Of TaeKwon-Do. Master Zielinski is also actively involved in tournaments in the Midwest both as a competitor and an official. Master Zielinski is the Program Director for the River Trails Park District and Technical Director for the Midwest Academy of TaeKwon-Do.
